It was a bright Thursday morning at Lockmar Elementary School, and the excitement was unmistakable. Third graders gathered, eyes wide with curiosity and smiles ready, for a very special lesson — one that could save lives.
In celebration of National School Bus Safety Week, Brevard Public Schools partnered with BusPatrol to host a hands-on Student Safety Teach-In. The goal? Empower students with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe in and around school buses.
The event kicked off with a warm welcome and a few fun questions to get students thinking: “Where is the safest place to cross the street?” “What’s the ‘danger zone’ around a bus?” With the help of BusPatrol’s safety experts — including Justin Meyers, President & Chief Innovation Officer, and Donald Wolfe, SVP of Government Operations — students quickly became safety pros.
Using a real school bus as their classroom, students learned:
How to safely board and exit the bus
Why it’s important to make eye contact with the driver before crossing
Where the “danger zone” is — and how to avoid it
What to do if they drop something near the bus
The teach-in was filled with interactive demonstrations, cheerful participation, and even a few “aha!” moments. Students practiced safe crossing techniques and got to see firsthand how technology is helping keep them safe.
This event follows the launch of the Brevard School Bus Safety Program, a partnership between BPS, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, and BusPatrol. The program uses advanced stop-arm camera technology to encourage safer driving behavior around school buses — a critical step in protecting students across the county.
As one student put it best: “Now I know how to be a bus safety hero!”
Brevard Public Schools is proud to partner with organizations like BusPatrol to make safety education both meaningful and memorable. Because when it comes to our students, safety always comes first.
